How we spend our morning is an indicator that determines whether we will be successful or not. How we spend our early morning from wakeful start to moments of productivity determines the person we make of ourselves. This time is vital as it is a catalyst to whether we will become the best version of ourselves, or continue our sustained mediocrity.

Morning routines are a way to start an impeccable habit that sets us up for success and also energizes our lives for productivity and goal-driven success.

Here are eight best starts to an impeccable morning routine for success.

1. Start with Meditation.

I have previously written how meditation is one of the highest success secrets. You can find my guide to starting a meditation practice here: …..

We live in an era of information bombardment. Every day we encounter entertainment and news media, to social media, longing to grab our precious time and limited attention. We get influenced by the views of our parents, our friends, and our work, and our culture. We lack the mindful, introspective awareness that is vital to our self-growth and sanity.

Meditation is a process of self-work that if practiced attentively with focus creates this protective shield and energizing force to success.

Meditation is not magic, but it does open up the inner doors within ourselves to unlock our most authentic potentials. It helps us overcome the low points in life and come out of it even stronger.

Starting with a 5 or 10-minute meditation every morning is one of the best habits we can do. It helps us focus better at work and in life, enhances our listening and empathy, and also brings us closer to a more spiritual existence.

A simple lotus position.

It may be good to sit on a meditation mat or pillow for comfort. I recommend getting one such as the one below:

Here is a simple meditation practice of mindful meditation.

  • Step 1: Sit in a comfortable position where you will not be disturbed for 5 or 10 minutes. If you can, sit in a lotus position, as shown below. Using a timer, set it to 5 minutes or 10 minutes. If this is your first time meditating, starting with 5 minutes is perfectly okay.
  • Step 2: Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Breath slowly at first, expanding that stomach during inhalation, and breathing out the exhalation in a slow, mindful way. Do this for the first minute to start your mindfulness observation.
  • Step 3: Let your breathing return to normal but keep focused observation on your breathing. For those who are beginners, the mind will slowly perceive thoughts.  As thoughts start kicking-in, notice yourself when you have lost focus on your breath. If you saw yourself straying that is okay, go back to observing your breathing again. Continue doing this until you can last through to the timer’s end. You will find that your attending to your breath will increase and relaxation and “zen-like” feeling will envelop you.

2. Start with an Attitude of Gratitude.

The way we spend our morning determines the way we feel, think, perform at work, how we develop our friendships and create the world we inhabit. Therefore, we must start the morning with an attitude of gratitude.

Gratitude is a vital force for wealth, luck, love, and relationship attraction. The universe does not give to ingrates, remember this, as you know those who never notice what the world has granted to them will not get more. More is given to those who have more, to those who feel, and thank more. The abundance mentality is only present to those who are thankful.

I did not realize the importance of this lesson at the beginning of my life. However, it had become apparent when I experienced this as life provided droplets instead of a gush of abundance. I have personally increased my income and wealth 10 to 20 fold with merely saying thank you whenever the universe gives me anything, and I mean anything.

When I find a quarter, I say “thank you!” And this small act of feeling gratitude leads to bigger ones. I found a better job. And then more opportunities. Thoughts one of these opportunities lead to failure, which opened up more roads, which lead to even more successes. This act is a way of testing our faith and building our courage. In all circumstances, we must find ways to be grateful.

A morning routine of saying thank you when you get up is excellent. Find three things in your life that is working great and say thank you. Start by writing them down, in a gratitude journal. It is easy enough, I often did this by just writing a note on my phone and putting five things I am grateful for, and this is a great way to start the day.

3. Start with the End In Mind (Goals).

Start with the end in mind.

For Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, starting with the end in mind meant living a life without regrets, especially in old age.

“For me, the best way to think about it was to project myself forward to age 80 and say, ‘Look, when I’m 80 years old, I want to have minimized the number of regrets that I have,'” he said.

“I don’t want to be 80 years old and in a quiet moment of reflection, thinking back over my life and cataloging a bunch of major regrets,” Bezos added.

Starting our morning, focusing on our goals is a great way to accomplish and conquer the day. We create goals by beginning with the end in mind.  By projecting ourselves a year, five, ten, twenty, or more in the future, within our imagination is a good practice. What is it exactly that we want that if we have, means we accomplished life with no regrets? For some, it is wealth, health, love.

Whatever it may be, it is good to put down our goals and in the morning, keeping this in mind and working towards chipping off a bit in accomplishing it.

4. Start With A Book.

The most successful people are also the most well-read people out there. They read and continue to study to improve, to learn, to get inspired, and to feel motivated towards their goals.

Starting a list of books to read and study and using the mornings to read is an excellent way towards becoming the best version of ourselves. The best books, in my opinion, to read are self-help, non-fiction, biographies, and fiction.

I much prefer non-fiction and biographies as I can get nuggets of wisdom and knowledge from others. Reading a memoir, for example, lets us walk into the footsteps of the person, through their experiences, their decisions, and their lessons learned. Imagine being able to learn from the best of the best. This pursuit is possible when we open and start reading a book.

Starting a morning reading routine is an outstanding success habit.

5. Start With Training and Exercise.

One of the best ways to become mindful of health is through creating an exercise routine. A morning exercise is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy.

Most successful people start the day with exercise or a trip to the gym in the morning. If we don’t have a gym membership, we can start by doing push-ups, sit-ups, or other calisthenics activities. The best weights you can use is your body weight. The healthy person can easily carry their weight. There are many ways to exercise at home. Here is one YouTube video that is great:

6. Start with Fasting.

This morning routine is more controversial, but I think it is something worth considering as we have been brainwashed to believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is not.

Our bodies require time for detoxification. Overweight and unhealthy people continuously eat that their body starts to create a lot of body fat. Our modern diet consists of sugar and high calorie, low-nutrient foods.

We also have very unhealthy eating habits. Fasting in the morning is suitable for most people whether you know it or not. For some people, this will be very hard to do as our bodies have become addicted to food. Most people can’t even withstand not eating for two hours. We have created a habit of snacking and overeating. Is it any wonder there are so many overweight people in America?

By waiting until 11 or 12 pm to start eating, our body has some time to detox. It also creates discipline and leads to fat loss. Starting a morning with a fast is the best way to stay healthy. I merely only drink tea or coffee and leave it at that, drinking enough water and waiting it out until noontime for lunch. Skipping breakfast is healthier than eating a low-nutrient, high sugar, high carb food that most people eat. Drink warm water, or coffee, or tea, with no meals. If we can train ourselves to be this disciplined, we create a healthier, more successful body in the long run.

7. Start with Journaling.

When was the last time you talked to yourself about yourself? The best tool for self-reflection is by writing down your thoughts and feelings so you can objectively look at yourself. Journaling is a way of thinking about our thinking.

Have you ever noticed less mature people don’t think about their actions and seldom practice self-reflection? The most successful people know themselves very, very well. Journaling is a tool for knowing thyself.

Having a notebook or maybe an app on your phone where you start writing down what happened, thinking through things through writing, and journaling is an excellent way for self-development.

Here’s a practice that will help you much. Upon making decisions, write down the steps you are going to take, and the thinking you have that goes into your decisions. You are writing down your anticipated actions and outcome. And then — when the result has occurred, looking back at your journal can truthfully pinpoint whether you were spot-on or you were wrong. If you were wrong, you have your journal to reflect it to you as clear as day. This self-reflection process thereby helps refine our thinking and decision making prowess.

Journaling is a self-development tool that is often used by many successful people. Many historic people in history have left their journals for the world; the Da Vinci, the Van Gogh, the Hemingway’s, the Einsteins, and the list goes on.

All men and women of renown have written down journal entries or diaries. The best among us practices forms of self-reflection. Journaling is a success habit from the best of the best.

8. Start with a List (To-do and Not-To-Do)

Just as it is essential to have goals, the day-to-day execution of it counts even more. Building a habit of productive mindfulness elevates us to be successful in the long haul where a to-do list and even more vital the “not-to-do” list comes in handy.

We already know about a to-do list; this is just a simple list to write down on what exactly you want to accomplish for the day. The list should have two or three things that could be done to advance the accomplishment of one of our top goals.

One great list pours into paper whatever we have inside our heads to empty it. It is crazy how much information bombardment we endure, from what to do for the day, to reminders, and work-related tasks clogging precious thinking time.

Starting a list of to-do is an excellent habit to start as a morning routine. However, a list of not-to-do is also one that not a lot of people create. These are an inventory of lessons learned, bad habits, or things we want to make sure to avoid to ensure our success.

For example, one of the things I have on my Not-To-Do this week is to not spend anything on items I do not need. Things that could go on this list are things to watch out for, for example: “Don’t play video games after work.” These may be habits we want to avoid so that we become more productive.

I hope this list will help you in any way. Please feel free to drop me a line or comment if you have any other tips that you find has dramatically improved your success morning routine.
